| Actually,
it was a dump, but everyone who lived there either was cool or hoped
to be, and it was home to a lot of Hyde Park's art scene.
5401's
last generation of tenants, Jon, Jesse,
Kirsten and Jeff, realized that
grunge had fallen out of style and moved the party across the street
to 5406 South Woodlawn Ave., bringing the green
couch and the hipsters but leaving the, you know, nasty stuff.
5406
remains the center of the universe, just like 5401... only now with
working heat and waterproof ceilings (!).
5406ers
usually are comprised of University of Chicago undergraduates, but
there have also been grad students, random civilians, and multiple
disappearing foreign nationals. 5406 remains the unofficial
home of Fire Escape Films (which was founded by
5401ers), its dinner parties are legendary, its toys are overwhelming,
its bathroom is aurally stimulating, and it is overstocked with
computers, telephones, liquor, olives, and pickled... things. And
because the 5406 is aesthetically pleasing, it's played host to
five film crews and counting: they bring their lights and booms
and cameras and body odor and it's all terribly exciting. |

In younger
and happier days
|
5406ers
currently consist of Jon, Jesse, and Will.
Staring this June, Jon and Jesse reunite with Kirsten in
5406: The Next Generation,
leaving Will here all alone for the summer. This is bad news for
poor lonely Will, but potentially good news for you if you're
apartmenthuntin'.
Of course,
you'd better
know what you're getting into. That's why you're here.... |
